  • The Climate Exam helps us to sharpen our knowledge about the climate crisis, provides scientifically grounded tools and perspectives for action, so that we can remain vigilant and service-oriented to the values of our rule of law, both now and in the future.

    Margo Verbaarschot

    Sustainability and Environmental Safety Advisor

The Climate Examination brought our colleagues together. From technician to data analyst: everyone walked away with new insights and renewed motivation to make a difference. When you learn together about the climate, not only knowledge grows, but also involvement. That makes the Climate Examination so valuable.

    Mart van Kuijk

    Climate Advisor

Last year, students proved to score significantly better on a large number of questions than their parents. This year, we are once again taking on the challenge to see if parents have learned something in the meantime and whether students are still so well informed.

    Manon Besselink

    Executive Secretary

Many participants found the climate exam quite tough! But that made the evening all the more enjoyable and educational. What we liked about the climate exam was that, in addition to questions about CO₂ emissions, the most polluting activities, and the most polluting continents, there was also focus on the solutions.

    Bregje van Bragt

    Managing Director

The climate exam not only prompts reflection on climate and the impact of climate change but also provides a wonderful impetus that leads to behavioural change. The climate exam is a great initiative that fosters more climate knowledge and - both personally and collectively - climate awareness.

    Cor Jansen

    Director-manager

Fortunately, the climate exam also asks questions about solutions, which provides the fresh wind we need. It's fun to participate, either alone or, for example, together with colleagues, friends or neighbors.

    Olof van der Gaag

    Chairman

I thought I was well informed, but the exam showed that I did not know many facts accurately. That was confronting and valuable. It would be nice if you received a personalized action list along with your result to contribute directly.

    Roel van Velzen

    Famous Dutch Artist

The organization of the first Climate Exam in May 2024 was a shot in the arm. It inspires people, increases awareness, and promotes better choices.

    Piet Briët

    Business consultant

The Climate Exam confronts you with the facts! Just as confronting as in secondary school, where the chances of success for the entire climate issue naturally depend on global action.

    Niels Kastelein

    Director of Climate

  • The Climate Exam is brilliant. It gives that old exam feeling – healthy tension with a touch of panic – but now it’s not about a grade, it’s about the future of our planet. Time to pass for sustainability!

    Abbie Chalgoum

    Actor & Author

Confronting and educational. Everyone should take this exam to gain a better understanding of the issues and their own role in it.

    Merijn Tinga

    Founder

I surprised myself with a number of facts. Everyone should take this exam. It is an accessible and playful way to catch yourself and your surroundings up on where we really stand with the climate.

    Sjoerd Boer

    Vice President

In a world where policy sometimes seems to be fact-free, it is valuable that the Climate Examination confronts participants with the facts and offers solutions.

    Michel Heijdra

    Director-General

Just join in, even if you think you don't have enough knowledge yet. There is also information included, so while you take the exam, you learn as well.

    Samuel Beltman

    Director

Taking steps and taking action starts with insight. When you create insight, knowing where the big opportunities and possibilities lie, you can also create the right movement.

    Ankie van Wersch

    Director

I am excited to organize the Climate Exam in Almelo this year. It brings the local community together and fosters beautiful conversations and media attention. My motivation? To let young people know: we see your concerns and take your future seriously.

    Judith Kraak

    Climate Mayor Almelo

The Climate Exam in Utrecht was a wonderful experience! Young and old came together in the beautiful Academy building at Dom Square. Next year, I will definitely participate again!

    Berend de Haas

    Founder

I thought the exam would be ‘easy’, but it was tougher than expected. You don't know many facts exactly. An eye-opener for almost everyone. Hopefully, the upcoming editions will reach even more people!

Frequently asked questions

Is your question not listed? Fill in the contact form and we will get in touch with you!

What is the Climate Exam?

The Climate Exam is a written exam. The exam lasts 60 minutes. There will be two variants available: for young people and for adults. Ideally, there will be an opportunity to discuss afterwards (possibly with refreshments).

What is the Climate Exam about?

It is about the causes and consequences of climate change. But of course, the solutions such as the energy transition, the circular economy, and aspects to which you can personally contribute are also included in the exam.

What is the level of the Climate Exam?

For adults, there are two levels this year: the regular exam and the expert variant.  The expert variant is comparable to last year's climate exam (check it here). The regular variant will be shorter and simpler.

What is the purpose of the Climate Exam?

The aim is to give everyone more insight into climate change and sustainable solutions. This increases awareness and encourages participants to take action. Our goal is to have it organised in at least 100 locations by May 2025.

Should participants prepare themselves?

That is of course preferable. Background articles, videos, and further information will be placed on this website. But even without thorough preparation, a candidate can participate and will gain the necessary insights.

What is needed to organise the Climate Examination?

1)    Establishing a location and date and time
2)    Communicating and inviting participants: both parents of students and local figures (mayor, councillor, local politicians, president of the football club, vicar, police chief, etc, etc). For this, draft texts (link) and posters will be made available.
3)    Printing the exams and providing pen and paper
4)    Host/hostess who takes on the role of exam coordinator
5)    Coffee/tea and possibly refreshments

Where is the Climate Examination?

The Climate Examination is organized at various locations in the Netherlands. Would you like to take the exam in your municipality, but it’s not listed yet? Then this is a good time to organize the Climate Examination together! Check the registration page for more information.

When will we receive the exam?

On Wednesday 6 May at the end of the day, all coordinators will gain access to the climate exam edition 2026.  The adult variant, the expert variant, the youth variant (and their English versions) as well as the climate pub quiz will then be shared.  Answers will also be made available, and a standard certificate of participation will be provided.

When does the Climate Examination take place?

Between Thursday 8 May and Friday 30 May: the date and time of the day may be determined by the organiser, with an evening time (e.g. 18:30 arrival; 19:00 start; 20:00 end; 20:30 closing) being the most obvious choice for schools.

Why organise the exam as a school?

First and foremost, it is both enjoyable and educational. Climate change is a current issue and not something of the distant future. By organising the Climate Exam, the school demonstrates that it considers this topic important, and it is an opportunity to engage with parents and students in a different way. Additionally, it is a great chance to welcome the alderman or local celebrities to the school. Finally, the exam also addresses solutions, so that participants leave motivated!

What is the level of the Climate Exam for Young People?

The youth variant is based on 4 havo level. But we are developing a broad set of questions. Teachers from secondary schools can compile their own climate exam based on these questions. They can also add their own questions so that the Climate Exam aligns well with the material that has been taught.

How can candidates apply?

If you want to organise the exam, we will mention this on this website (under locations). Candidates can also register here. As the organiser, you will have access to the registrations for your location.

Who evaluates the exam?

The participants can check the exam themselves after completion. In the week following the exam, they will receive the correct answers and explanations via email. The coordinator does have the correct answers and can therefore provide an explanation during the follow-up discussion.

Who organises the Climate Exam?

The climate examination is an initiative of Darel Education and is developed in close collaboration with the KNMI, Utrecht University, the Young Climate Movement, and the Climate Alliance. Like Darel Education, it has no profit motive.

Is there promotional material to recruit participants?

Absolutely! We have created posters and flyers that can be found in this link! Download the posters, print them out & hang them up!

Is there an English version?

Certainly! The Climate Exam is also available in English, just like the online version.
