Exam material

What topics are covered by the Climate Examination?

The Climate Examination covers the causes and effects of climate change, the possible solutions, and your role in it. The questions are compiled in collaboration with climate experts and are current and factually supported.

This year you can choose from three variants: the regular exam, an expert version and a youth variant. This way, everyone can participate at their own level. The questions are divided into three themes:

Causes & Consequences

Climate change starts with understanding: what is actually happening now?

Climate change starts with understanding: what is actually happening now?

Oorzaken & Gevolg

Solutions and Adaptation

From a fossil to a green future: building change together.

From a fossil to a green future: building change together.

Oplossingen en Adaptatie

Are you part of the solution?

And yes... you also have a role. What you do inspires others. This is how we move forward together.

And yes… you also have an important role. Even if it seems small, every action helps!

And yes... you also have a role. What you do inspires others. This is how we move forward together.

Frequently asked questions

Is your question not listed? Fill in the contact form and we will get in touch with you!

What is the Climate Exam?

The Climate Exam is a written exam. The exam lasts 60 minutes. There will be two variants available: for young people and for adults. Ideally, there will be an opportunity to discuss afterwards (possibly with refreshments).

What is the Climate Exam about?

It is about the causes and consequences of climate change. But of course, the solutions such as the energy transition, the circular economy, and aspects to which you can personally contribute are also included in the exam.

What is the level of the Climate Exam?

For adults, there are two levels this year: the regular exam and the expert variant.  The expert variant is comparable to last year's climate exam (check it here). The regular variant will be shorter and simpler.

What is the purpose of the Climate Exam?

The aim is to give everyone more insight into climate change and sustainable solutions. This increases awareness and encourages participants to take action. Our goal is to have it organised in at least 100 locations by May 2025.

Should participants prepare themselves?

That is of course preferable. Background articles, videos, and further information will be placed on this website. But even without thorough preparation, a candidate can participate and will gain the necessary insights.

What is needed to organise the Climate Examination?

1)    Establishing a location and date and time
2)    Communicating and inviting participants: both parents of students and local figures (mayor, councillor, local politicians, president of the football club, vicar, police chief, etc, etc). For this, draft texts (link) and posters will be made available.
3)    Printing the exams and providing pen and paper
4)    Host/hostess who takes on the role of exam coordinator
5)    Coffee/tea and possibly refreshments

Where is the Climate Examination?

The Climate Examination is organized at various locations in the Netherlands. Would you like to take the exam in your municipality, but it’s not listed yet? Then this is a good time to organize the Climate Examination together! Check the registration page for more information.

When will we receive the exam?

On Wednesday 6 May at the end of the day, all coordinators will gain access to the climate exam edition 2026.  The adult variant, the expert variant, the youth variant (and their English versions) as well as the climate pub quiz will then be shared.  Answers will also be made available, and a standard certificate of participation will be provided.

When does the Climate Examination take place?

Between Thursday 8 May and Friday 30 May: the date and time of the day may be determined by the organiser, with an evening time (e.g. 18:30 arrival; 19:00 start; 20:00 end; 20:30 closing) being the most obvious choice for schools.

Why organise the exam as a school?

First and foremost, it is both enjoyable and educational. Climate change is a current issue and not something of the distant future. By organising the Climate Exam, the school demonstrates that it considers this topic important, and it is an opportunity to engage with parents and students in a different way. Additionally, it is a great chance to welcome the alderman or local celebrities to the school. Finally, the exam also addresses solutions, so that participants leave motivated!

What is the level of the Climate Exam for Young People?

The youth variant is based on 4 havo level. But we are developing a broad set of questions. Teachers from secondary schools can compile their own climate exam based on these questions. They can also add their own questions so that the Climate Exam aligns well with the material that has been taught.

How can candidates apply?

If you want to organise the exam, we will mention this on this website (under locations). Candidates can also register here. As the organiser, you will have access to the registrations for your location.

Who evaluates the exam?

The participants can check the exam themselves after completion. In the week following the exam, they will receive the correct answers and explanations via email. The coordinator does have the correct answers and can therefore provide an explanation during the follow-up discussion.

Who organises the Climate Exam?

The climate examination is an initiative of Darel Education and is developed in close collaboration with the KNMI, Utrecht University, the Young Climate Movement, and the Climate Alliance. Like Darel Education, it has no profit motive.

Is there promotional material to recruit participants?

Absolutely! We have created posters and flyers that can be found in this link! Download the posters, print them out & hang them up!

Is there an English version?

Certainly! The Climate Exam is also available in English, just like the online version.
